The tournament joins the American and Aussie Opens in implementing replay technology.
Video review systems will be launched at The Championships in the upcoming tournament.
Players will gain the ability to question particular calls from the official, mirroring the system already in place at each of the American Grand Slam and the Australian Open.
This technology will be accessible on Centre Court and the number one court for the duration of the Championships and on the other four show courts when they are hosting singles matches.
This step comes just a year after the AELTC implemented electronic line calling, which effectively ended the longstanding tradition of line officials.
Scope of Challenges
Competitors cannot to challenge the accuracy of the ELC system, but they can request the official to re-examine other situations, such as:
- Whether a ball has double-bounced.
- If a shot made contact with an opponent's racquet or body during play.
- Potential interference at the conclusion of a point.
Notably, there will be no limit on the number of challenges a player can initiate.
Practical Application
An illustrative case occurred in a recent tournament recently, where Daniil Medvedev initiated the video challenge against Jack Draper.
Draper conceded it was a difficult call for the umpire, but thought his opponent had "played the rules effectively."
Official Aurelie Tourte watched a replay and ruled Draper was guilty of interference, granting the rally to Medvedev.
Broader Adoption
This technology are not new for major tournaments. It has been in use at the US Open since 2023 and the Australian Open this year.
Additionally, it is becoming more common on the women’s WTA Tour, and by the coming year the ATP circuit plans to have the system implemented at every one of its events.
Additional Innovations
A further change at Wimbledon this year will be the introduction of graphical cues on scoreboards to complement the audio calls from the electronic line calling system.
This solves situations where the crowd have occasionally been uncertain if a shot was out or in.
Finally, with precisely a century of days remaining until the beginning of the Championships, organizers have further revealed an increase in daily attendance at the qualifying competition in the qualifying venue.
