2K Hires Apex Legends Developer to Boost Troubled Action Game Project Ethos

2K Games has welcomed a seasoned producer from Respawn Entertainment to oversee the development team at their internal studio, which is currently working on the anticipated over-the-shoulder action-packed title known as Project Ethos.

Leadership Transition Comes After Mixed Response

The new appointee assumes the role of studio head at 31st Union following the departure of previous head the ex-Sledgehammer Games executive, who was reportedly let go due to Project Ethos' disappointing early showing last autumn.

On Wednesday, the company's top executive David Ismailer informed team members about this strategic move through an internal memo, which emphasized that playtesting had indicated the requirement for a distinct direction.

Ismailer expressed that the team is now refining the project with a revised focus, aiming to better meet gamer demands.

Trend of Strategic Acquisitions

The news follows a similar step taken by the publisher in the summer, when they brought on an industry veteran from Blizzard to work on the BioShock development group.

Below is the full content from the president's communication:

Team—

I know you all just wrapped up your gathering - I hope you’re as enthusiastic as I am with the recent updates. Previously I sent you all a note, I stated the following: “I am confident in this crew. You all are some of the most driven and innovative creators we have had the chance to collaborate with - and we’re excited for that relationship to persist.”

Through your commitment and versatility, particularly over the last year, you repeatedly show that.

The gamer responses from last autumn’s Project ETHOS playtest was enlightening. It validated the potential of a roguelike shooter but indicated we still had improvements to make. It uncovered the necessity for a sharper brand.

The progress is encouraging to see how far you’ve advanced. You embraced the feedback to heart and reimagined Project ETHOS with a renewed direction - one that’s poised to achieve its ambition to our fans.

The belief in Project ETHOS increases every day. To further the outstanding development you’ve made, I’m excited to introduce Ben Brinkman as the new Studio Head of 31st Union. Following several months of talks, Ben officially joins us on next week.

Ben’s management and expertise in the PVP shooter space is extensive, having dedicated the past decade and a half producing and leading some of the most recognizable series in gaming, for example Call of Duty: Black Ops, and more recently, the battle royale hit.

Let’s together in receiving him next week. We are all eager to keep witnessing the evolution of Project ETHOS in the weeks to follow.

David

Background of the Incoming Leader

The appointee currently serves in the role of senior developer and head of production at the renowned studio for Apex Legends. Brinkman previously worked at Treyarch and Activision in various production roles on the Call of Duty games, and, earlier in his career, had stints at 2K and Electronic Arts.

Title Details and Concept

The upcoming game was unveiled in last year alongside a public demo. Initially, the developers described the game as a "no-cost, third-person perspective action-packed experience and an innovative evolution on the genre."

"Build your perfect run—or die trying—in this 3rd-person action shooter! Customize your character in real-time to suit your personal playstyle," the game's pitch explains. "Challenge the opponents with unique powers, stakes, and challenges that evolve every match. Do you leave securely with your valuable rewards? Alternatively take a risk, risk it all, and pray your team can earn top ranking? The choice is in your hands."

The game lacks an official debut schedule or platforms, but enthusiasts can look forward to more updates as creation continues.
